Opening Speech 2021

Delivered by Benjamin Torcellini at Duck Day.

Welcome, welcome, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, dogs and cats, and everyone else in TV land, and the interwebz. Welcome to the seventh annual Duck Day. We want to give a colossal thank you to our big brother, Micah, who is managing our live stream while he is away at college.

“I reverently believe that the Maker who made us all makes everything in New England but the weather,” proclaimed the great Yankee philosopher Mark Twain. The weather in New England is different all the time; it can be snowing one day and 50 degrees the next. As Mark Twain also wrote, “If you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.”

Ever since this country was founded, people have tried to find a more reliable source for weather prediction. First, they tried the groundhog and other mammals, and they are still trying without much success. Then people tried with scientific equipment, but their equipment is not very accurate. Now we have a duck, who has been proven the most accurate of them all. He graduated from Stormy Heights Academy, the superior school for weather predicting ducks. He has spoken correctly for six years and has never forsaken the people of Eastford, Connecticut. He will continue in his accuracy for many years to come.

We would like to thank Carol Davidge, State Senator Dan Champagne, State Representative Pat Boyd, First Selectman Jacqueline Dubois, and everyone who has helped Duck Day to continue for years.

AND NOW WE PRESENT...
